NHEdGIS and NHSTE are proud to announce the state winners of the 2023 New Hampshire’s Student Storytelling Competition for middle and high school students. From hemlock woolly adelgid to oriental bittersweet, this year's projects were interesting, well thought out, and told great stories!

The State Finalists will each receive a prize of $100 thanks to ESRI’s monetary support and the administrative support of NHSTE.

How to Participate in New Hampshire Legislative Hearings

New Hampshire citizens can upload written testimony on bills without appearing in person, specific to the House of Representatives. Legislators check this submissions page frequently to review testimony that has been submitted on bills coming before their committee. Testimony submitted online is available for anyone to view. The form accepts testimony through the end of the day of each bill’s public hearing.

For NH Senate bills, a copy of your written testimony must still be emailed to the committees, using the links provided further on in this update (see “Participation Methods for the 2023 Legislative Session”).

On December 14th, the Federal Communications Commission announced that it is seeking public comment on using its E-rate program to pay for school and library cybersecurity improvements. State Report: On Tuesday, February 15, NH Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut and Representative Rick Ladd (R-Haverhill) introduced to the House Education Committee House Bill (HB) 1671, which would overhaul key elements of the state law that governs the content and requirements for a public education in New Hampshire.

The biggest change to the education laws would be that public schools would only be required to teach English Language Arts, math, science, and social studies. It would remove art, health and physical education, engineering, computer science, digital literacy, and world languages from the core academic domains. (Ref: Reaching Higher NH)

This bill would turn over the power of deciding the minimum standards of education directly to the legislature, with no prior input from education professionals or citizens.

State: The House and Senate are meeting on Wednesday, January 5, to vote on outstanding bills from the 2021 session. The House will be voting on HB 607, the local school voucher bill, which the House Education Committee voted along party lines to recommend passing. The bill would undercut our public schools and communities, and divert taxpayer funds to pay for school vouchers totaling up to $41,000 per student, per year. (Source: NH Education Network)

NHSTE inspires, creates, and supports a culture of connected learners. The PL Chair will find meaningful, diverse, and timely professional learning experiences based on the needs of the NHSTE membership. They will promote networking, the sharing of ideas/best practices, and professional connection opportunities.

Hello - I’m excited to bring some new Professional Learning ideas and activities to the NHSTE community. We fully recognize that this year is another challenging one for educators (bit of an understatement). Therefore, before jumping into the planning process, I would love to hear from you.

To ensure what we are providing is valuable and directly related to what you need right now, it is important that we hear your thoughts. I put a survey together and am hopeful that you can take a few minutes to go through it - all membership levels are encouraged to reply.

This will be a year of virtual-only activities, but with some creativity and innovation (my favorite things) I am confident we can put together some fantastic options. Thanks for your input.

Advocacy Notes from NHSTE - June 2021

State: Join Reaching Higher NH on Monday, June 7 at 3 p.m. for a webinar examining the proposed state budget. They will walk through the big education-related issues, including the voucher proposal, statewide property tax (SWEPT), school funding, higher education and school building aid. There will be open space for questions and discussion. Webinar is free but you must Register.

On Wednesday, May 26, the Senate Finance Committeevoted 5-2 to include SB 130, theschool voucher bill, in the larger state budget package. The proposal, which isheavily opposed by Granite Staters, would use public taxpayer dollars to fund private and homeschooling expenses through “Education Freedom Accounts,” or vouchers.

Federal: The U.S. Department of Education (U.S. DOE) released afact sheetlast week that aims to provide guidance on federal relief funds for schools. The fact sheet also explains funding for specific subgroups of students, methods for making subgrants, and timelines for distributing and using the funds.

Attended the New Hampshire Education Network meeting last month (May 3rd) representing NHSTE. A legislative update was reviewed and discussed at this meeting that included representatives from educational and business organizations.

The The 2021 Christa McAuliffe Transforming, Teaching, & Technology Conference (CMTC) is back better than ever as we celebrate our 35th Anniversary!!! CMTC21 is the perfect opportunity to present either ONSITE or VIRTUALLY.

Embracing lessons learned from CMTC20, this year we are excited to announce that we are offering BOTH ONSITE and VIRTUAL engagement opportunities for solution partners, presenters, and attendees.

NHSTE Advocacy Notes - May 2021

$315,451,470 to be distributed to NH LEA’s from the ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND (ARPESSER). USDOE Fact sheet on the use of these funds can be located HERE. One of the options on the list is: “purchasing educational technology (including hardware, software, connectivity, assistive technology, and adaptive equipment) for students that aids in regular and substantive educational interaction between students and their classroom instructors, including students from low-income families and children with disabilities.”

Two FCC commissioners, Geoffrey Starks and Jessica Rosenworcel, discussed the Homework Gap” where $7.1B will be allocated through the E-Rate fund. We provided input on what should be included and how to distribute it through E-Rate. On May 10th, the FCC will announce how these dollars will be allocated. The CCSSO Report: “Restart & Recovery: Home Digital Access Data Collection: Blueprint for State Education Leaders” was frequently referenced where a set of common elements for collecting data about student home digital access are outlined.

FCC program: Please share with NH families:

The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program is aFederal Communications Commission (FCC) program that provides a temporary discount on monthly broadband bills for qualifying low-income households. As of May 12, 2021, eligible households will be able to enroll in the program to receive a monthly discount off the cost of broadband service from an approved provider. Eligible households can enroll through an approved provider or by visitinghttps://getemergencybroadband.org.

State Report: (Refer to http://reachinghighernh.org/2021/04/26/nh-education-roundup-april-26-2021/)

In a recent report from Reaching Higher NH, SB 130, the statewide school voucher bill, could disproportionately affect rural districts, districts that serve large proportions of low-income students, and districts that have lower capacity to raise revenue through taxes (often referred to as “property-poor” communities). SB 130 would create taxpayer-funded “Education Freedom Accounts” for low- and moderate-income families to use for private school and homeschool expenses. The bill was passed by the Senate last month, then laid on the table with the expectation that it would be included in the state’s 2022-2023 budget “trailer” bill, HB 2. Last chance for public input on that budget is May 4th, 1pm or 6pm.

New Hampshire Education Network was launched in March by the Reaching Higher NH team. The network is a group of educators, elected officials, parents, community leaders and members of the public who share an interest in public education. Each month they provide updates and information on key education issues and conduct small-group discussions. Register to be part of the network here.

The NHSTE Pat Keyes and Susan Janosz Award nominations are back for 2021 and are now open, with the deadline for nominations set for Friday October 1st, 2021.

Do you have a teacher or teacher leader in your school or district who should be acknowledged for their contributions to school, students, faculty, and school culture? Do you know a local “technology hero” who went above and beyond to help learners and other teachers survive the difficult times of the past year? This is the perfect opportunity to let that person know their efforts are appreciated and recognize their contributions.

We are looking forward to celebrating the exciting efforts of NH educators once again. Nominate yourself or a friend for one of these two Prestigious NHSTE awards.

Pat Keyes Technology - Using Educator Award

The NHSTE Technology Using Educator Award is named in memory of Pat Keyes; a former secondary teacher in the Keene School District who served NHSTE in many capacities including editor of the NHSTE Connections. The nominee for this award will be an educator who exemplifies the following:

Functions as a public or private PreK-12 teacher providing direct instruction in a New Hampshire school(s).
Developed effective units integrating educational technology.
Demonstrated improved student performance with application of technology.
Shared ideas/initiatives in formal and informal arenas using traditional and electronic methods.

Susan Janosz Technology Impact Award

The NHSTE Technology Impact Award is named in memory of Susan Janosz, longtime employee of the Manchester School District who was employed as a Technology Integrator. The nominee for this award will be an educational professional who exemplifies the following:

Provides leadership in a public or private PreK-16 New Hampshire school(s).
The nominee's work has had a significant positive impact on technology use in education locally, statewide, regionally and/or nationally.
The nominee has involved the community in the initiative or program to facilitate partnerships with business and/or legislative initiatives to advance the use of technology in education.
Supported technology within the context of school reform, restructuring and improvement.
Demonstrated a commitment to ongoing self-education by keeping abreast of emerging technologies.
The quality of education and/or work experience has been significantly advanced in the nominee's workplace as a result of the nominee's efforts.

In the past, this award has gone to Technology Directors, Technology Coordinators, Technology Integrationists, Curriculum Coordinators, Media Specialists/Generalists, SAU Administration (i.e., Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents) and/or School District Administrators (i.e., Principals and Vice Principals).

Award winners receive $1,000, a plaque, and a letter of congratulations from the Governor. They are also nominated to receive a NH Edies Award in the spring of the following year.

The COVID-19 public health crisis continues to impact schools across the country. With closures likely to extend into the 2020-21 school year, states and districts are continuing to leverage online learning. However, notable gaps exist between the quality of learning accessible to students from advantaged and disadvantaged communities. Therefore, significant and equitable funding is critical to ensure that all students are able to receive effective instruction.

We need your help advocating for urgent federal funding necessary to support educator capacity in effective use of technology, both during COVID-19 and beyond. On this page, you will find a number of materials, including a customizable email template, that you can use to quickly send a message to your members of Congress. The platform allows the user to send the message with a few simple clicks.

While federal legislators provided some relief to address schools’ immediate needs through the CARES Act, there remains an urgent need to prepare educators for the long-term with skills to design and deliver effective online learning opportunities to all students. Specifically, we need dedicated funding for professional development to ensure that all educators are prepared for technology-empowered pedagogy during COVID-19 and beyond.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the HEROES Act, which permits the use of stabilization funds for “ongoing professional development to staff in how to effectively provide quality online academic instruction.” However, the HEROES Act only funds a fraction of the $200 billion that national experts have recommended to stabilize schools. And like the CARES Act, HEROES fails to provide specific, dedicated support to professional development for online learning.

This is why we need your help. Please show your support for increased federal relief dollars for education and funding dedicated towards professional development for online learning.

COVID-19 Education Coalition Members Provide Guidance for District Leaders

The effects of COVID-19 on students and families require district leaders to collaborate with local stakeholders — including administrators, classroom teachers, school support staff, parents, and students — to plan strategic actions that allow digital learning to effectively and equitably continue into the summer and beyond.

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), Turnaround for Children, the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF), and the New Hampshire Society for Technology in Education (NHSTE) — who are members of the broader COVID-19 Education Coalition— provide three key considerations that districts must keep in mind as they build immediate and long-term plans:equitable infrastructure, active digital learning content, and educator capacity building. 2020 Assistive Technology Fair Going Virtual - Wednesday, May 20, 2020

The New Hampshire Department of Education is hosting their second annual Assistive Technology Fair virtually this year. The 2020 Assistive Technology Fair is being developed by Inclusive Technology Solutions, and promises to be an exciting day long virtual event.

The Fair will run from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST. This event will bring together New Hampshire based practitioners and organizations; national Assistive Technology presenters and vendors. The day is comprised of 25 minute assistive technology presentations. The program will consist of 25 minute EdCamp-style conversations; and, 25 minute vendor presentations. Over 40 sessions will be available throughout the day and the best part of all – the event is FREE!

EdCamp is an unconference.

What Does That Mean?

Come enjoy a day with colleagues. Arrive with an idea for a session that you would like to lead or with the anticipation of a full day of learning. A session might explore a technology tool, a discussion about best practices, or a collaborative presentation with multiple facilitators.

During the first hour, you will have time to meet other teachers over coffee. There will be an empty session board where you and all attendees can post session titles.

Over the course of the day, you will have the opportunity to attend up to four sessions. Edcamps empower attendees with the rule to “vote with your feet”. If a session doesn’t meet your needs, simply get up and move on to another room.

We will be providing a certificate of attendance for the professional development you receive. You will learn something new, maybe make a new friend, and receive information that you can immediately apply in your classroom and professional life!

How can we improve the world? The TCS’ Ignite Innovation Student Challenge wants to inspire students in 6th-8th grade and at least 10 years old to answer this question by sharing an idea for a digital solution, like a mobile app, website, robot, or wearable tech. Work with a team (up to 4) or on your own to define a problem that can be solved through a digital innovation in the areas of Health, Our Planet, or Education. All you need is an idea communicated via a 1-2-minute video that addresses how the digital solution will improve the world and the computational thinking strategies that were used to guide to the solution to win BIG!

Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, are launching the second year of igniting innovation through computational thinking.

The TCS’ Ignite Innovation Student Challenge encourages sixth through eighth-grade students to use computational thinking to create digital solutions that improve the world and solve problems impacting TCS’ three social responsibility pillars: Our Planet, Health, and Education. Eligibility:

Must be for students at a public or charter school.
The school must develop an itemized budget for the current year for the robotics program.
The school must have established a partnership with, or has a valid letter of commitment from, at least one sponsor, business entity, or institution of higher education for the purpose of participation in a robotics competition.
The school must identify at least one competitive event in which the program will participate.
Not a recipient of a Robotics Education Development Program Grant SY 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

The purpose of the program is to motivate public and charter school students to pursue educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while building critical life and work-related skills Grants from the robotics education fund established in RSA 188-E:24 shall be available to any eligible public school or chartered public school for the purpose of financing the establishment of a robotics team and its participation in competitive events.

Computer Science for Middle and High School Educators

A three-part evening series will be held in Gorham, NH over the next three months to support schools in expanding computer science opportunities for students. Computer science content for grades K-12 was formally added to how NH public schools define an adequate education in July of 2018 through HB 1674. This series of workshops is aimed at supporting computer science opportunities for the middle and high school grades.

The computer science opportunities in New Hampshire are growing quickly. Participants will explore how to excite and prepare their students for the growth in computer science related aspects of many career fields.

Session #1 - Tuesday, October 22, 2019 from 4:00 - 8:00
We will discuss what the story arc looks like for students wanting to get involved in CS, including: requirements, typical starting salaries for career tracks, and unique paths to the workforce. We will look at how to bridge early middle school curriculum with high school curriculum and then onto connecting to workforce opportunities.

Session #2 - Tuesday, November 12, 2019 from 4:00 - 8:00
The main topics of this session will explore big data, artificial intelligence, and other CS careers beyond game design and programming. We will hear from industry leaders about future vision and opportunities for these computer science fields within NH and/or New England.

Session #3 - Tuesday, December 10, 2019 from 4:00 - 8:00
Cybersecurity will be the main topic of this session. We will share resources for integrating cybersecurity topics into your curriculum as well as explore career opportunities in this realm. A panel of cybersecurity experts, including Jason Golden, Chief Information Security Officer of Mainstay Technologies will join us for this session. During this final session, we will look at next steps on how we, as educators, can evolve our classes and culture to excite and prepare students for the digital aspects of all future jobs.

Computer science educators, those potentially interested in becoming certified computer science teachers, Extended Learning Opportunities/Internship coordinators, those interested in workforce development, school counselors, business teacher, any teacher interested in technology-related entrepreneurship, and other middle/high school content area teachers who are interested in how computer science connects to their subject area are all invited to attend.

The sessions will be held at North Country Education Services (NCES) in Gorham, NH from 4:00-8:00 PM. The sessions are free to all NH educators, but pre-registration is required at ncedservices.org/csnorth-fall2019 or by calling 603-466-5437. The series is being presented in partnership with White Mountain Science Inc (WMSI) through the CSNorth project currently supported by the Jane’s Trust Foundation. A light meal will be provided. Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” 2019-2020 Education Contest

The contest challenges students in grades 6-12 to show how STEM can be applied to help improve their local communities. 300 state finalists will be selected to submit an activity plan. This Contest focuses on how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (“STEM”) can be applied to help improve your local community.

Entry Form Questions:

What is the biggest problem,challenge or issue faced by your school community that you will tackle for your Solve for Tomorrow project? (not to exceed 200 words in length)
How can STEM be applied to address this problem,challenge or issue? (not to exceed 200 words in length)

Each national winner school receives a $100K prize package including Samsung technology and classroom resources. Plus, all teams get to attend the Final Event in Washington DC to meet with congressional leaders in April.

Entry Period began on Thursday, August 29, 2019 and ends on Wednesday, October 23, 2019. The Contest will be divided into four phases.

The Contest is open only to legal residents of the fifty United States, who are twenty one years of age or older, and currently employed as full-time teachers in a public Middle School, Junior High School, or High School, grades 6-12, including Charter Schools that are 50% or more publicly funded. Subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Entrants are responsible for confirming whether their school has any policies or restrictions concerning participation in Contests such as this prior to entering. The awarding of prizes is subject to such school policies. If, for any reason, any school is unable to accept a prize, including due to school policies, the prize will be forfeited and Sponsor will not have any further obligation to such school. Digital Learning Specialist RoundTable for Elementary Level PreK-5

This Digital Learning Specialist RoundTable for the elementary level (PreK-5ish) is being hosted by Jenny Lynch at the Richard Maghakian Memorial School in Brookline, NH for elementary school Technology Integration Teachers/Specialists on Friday, May 31st. Part Learning Tour, part EdCamp, and part discussion group, the attendees set the discussion topics for the day and support each other with their challenges.

We know that professional development is important for everyone. In many cases, technology integration teachers are solo in their own buildings or districts. This roundtable opportunity is for those technology integration teachers interested in having conversations about particular topics to improve instruction for staff and students in their own district. Topics/discussion will be tailored based on participant attendees thoughts. Time is included to view the "skills" block that happens each Friday at the school. "Skills time" is spent with the integrated arts team to teach the students "skills" they need for PBL. It was means of compromise when the school went full integration and removed the "computer special". Let’s get together to have thoughtful conversations to help move our schools forward.

A light breakfast and lunch are included in the registration fee. Attendees are encouraged to bring both their best practices and challenges.

NHSTE is recruiting hosts in locations around the state, for RoundTables in 2019/2020 school year. If you are interested in hosting a RoundTable event at your school, please contact, Cyndi Dunlap, NHSTE Professional Learning Chair at nhstePD@nhste.org.

We have great news: Computer Science Discoveries and Principles workshops are offered at no cost to many New Hampshire teachers accepted into the program!

Designed to support middle and high school teachers before and during their first year teaching Computer Science Discoveries or Computer Science Principles, the Code.org Professional Learning Program begins with a five-day, in-person summer workshop followed by four additional sessions throughout the year. Best of all? No previous experience teaching computer science is needed.

The scholarship or program fee covers the full year-long program, including teaching materials, workshop supplies, 9 days of professional development, and meals (both breakfast and lunch) during workshops. This day long workshop is designed to help attendees think about best practices when mixing math and technology together. Join Stefan Fritz (Math Teacher, Bedford High School) and Craig Sheil (Digital Learning Specialist, Bedford High School) for a hands-on, full-day workshop where you will cultivate teaching strategies for integrating technology effectively into the math classroom.

Presenters will walk through a series of different math activities/challenges (ranging from content areas - algebra, data collection, etc). Attendees will actually complete tasks together as students would in class. Then, the presenters will help take the mystery out of how the activity was created from start to finish. Focus will be on using the desmos.com graphing calculator as well as the Activity Builder, using Google G-Suite Apps, and equatIO.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Led by U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the top Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today a group of Senate Democrats introduced new legislation aimed at closing the growing digital divide in communities across the country. The Digital Equity Act of 2019 creates new federal investments targeted toward a diverse array of projects at the state and local level that promote "digital equity"- a concept defined by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance as the "condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy and economy." The legislation was cosponsored by Senators Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Angus King (I-ME), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Gary Peters (D-MI), and Jack Reed (D-RI), and a companion bill will also be introduced in the House of Representatives.

"For so many of us, having a reliable broadband connection is a given-we use the internet to pay bills, do our taxes, book travel, do homework, and much more. We can do it on our own time, in our own homes-even from our phones. But for far too many individuals and families-including those from communities of color, people with disabilities, low-income households, and rural communities-getting online isn't so easy to do, and I strongly believe that in 2019, we shouldn't be a country of haves and have-nots when it comes to using the internet," said Senator Murray. "That's why I'm proud to join with my Democratic colleagues to introduce the Digital Equity Act, which will direct significant new federal investments to help ensure people in our communities have the tools, support, and technologies necessary to take full advantage of a broadband connection when they have access to one. Congress can and should help states, counties, tribes, and others do more to close the growing digital divide, and the Digital Equity Act is a major step in the right direction. "The Internet is a powerful tool that has become instrumental in economic and social mobility and civic engagement. In 2009, Hawaii capitalized on funds made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand broadband to schools and public computer centers, making it one of the most-connected states in the country. But physical infrastructure is only part of the equation," said Senator Hirono. "The Digital Equity Act will provide grants for things like digital literacy and digital skills education to low-income populations and improving the online accessibility of social services for individuals with disabilities that will allow the people of Hawaii to make full use of what broadband has to offer. Only then can they fully participate in our society, democracy, and economy."

"More and more, we rely on the internet to help us participate in our democracy and take part in the global economy. Expanding access to the digital world will help combat inequality, increase transparency in our institutions, and help citizens hold their government accountable. That's why I'm pleased to support the Digital Equity Act," said Senator Whitehouse.

"As we rely more on technology in our everyday lives, we have to make sure that every family has access to broadband, regardless of their zip code. This legislation will help close the digital divide and bring high-speed internet to communities across the county,"said Senator Klobuchar.

"Access to broadband internet service is literally transformative. With broadband, students can access vast educational resources, families remain connected, citizens engage their representatives, and businesses reach new customers," said Senator Blumenthal."For far too long, the digital divide has left behind those overlooked and underserved communities that would benefit most from broadband. Our bill would invest much-needed resources in our broadband infrastructure – spurring growth and development, and helping to level the playing field for all Americans."

"Broadband is the infrastructure of the 21st Century-it isn't just nice, it's necessary if we're going to build an economy that works for everyone," said Senator Smith. "This bill represents a positive step forward in that direction, ensuring that traditionally overlooked communities are not left behind in our efforts to provide affordable and reliable internet service to all Minnesotans and other Americans."

"From students completing homework to people of all ages applying online for jobs, broadband internet plays a crucial role in a community's growth and economy. Expanding access to broadband will help create more opportunity for Marylanders, and will move our state forward on closing the digital divide. I'm proud to join my colleagues in introducing this common-sense legislation, and I will continue working to expand economic opportunity for all," said Senator Van Hollen.

According to the Pew Research Center, nearly one in five teenagers in the U.S. say they have been unable to complete homework assignments due to lack of a reliable internet connection. The digital divide, also sometimes referred to as the "homework gap" as it applies to students, exacerbates existing wealth and income gaps in our communities; subsequently, many people-including those from communities of color, people with disabilities, low-income households, and rural communities, overwhelmingly impacted by the digital skills gap-are at risk of being left behind in an increasingly technology-driven world, absent intervention. To that end, the Digital Equity Act of 2019 strengthens federal support for efforts to help ensure students, families, and workers have the information technology capacity needed to fully participate in society by creating an annual $125 million formula grant program for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to fund the creation and implementation of comprehensive digital equity plans in each State, as well as an additional annual $125 million competitive grant program to support digital equity projects undertaken by individual groups, coalitions, or communities of interest. Finally, the legislation tasks the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) with evaluating digital equity projects and providing policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels with detailed information about which projects are most effective.

"I believe the future belongs to the connected. No matter who you are or where you live in this country, you need access to modern communications to have a fair shot at 21st century success. But today millions of American lack the broadband access that they need to meaningfully participate in the digital age. That means too many students fall into the Homework Gap, unable to complete school assignments that require high-speed internet service. It means that too many small businesses will not have the work force with the skills necessary to compete in the global economy. It means that too many communities will go without the civic and commercial infrastructure that is needed to thrive and grow. So thank you to Senator Murray for this legislation which thoughtfully addresses digital equity and seeks to expand technology opportunity for all," said Federal Communications Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel.

"Local and state leadership drive most efforts to bring people online with affordable Internet access and training. On the one hand, this is fabulous because trusted community relationships are essential to effective digital inclusion work. On the other hand, financial support of local digital inclusion work is sorely lacking. The Digital Equity Act recognizes the value of local trusted institutions while allocating financial support. K-12 Professional Development in STEM / NGSS Integrated Science through Aquaponics

The Concord Regional Diploma Academy is offering a 3-day summer workshop to equip teachers to explore Next Generation Science Standards and integrate STEM content through a long-term classroom project. Participants will work together to assemble an aquaponics classroom kit and process a set of prepared lesson plans. Distinct guided inquiries are provided for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The lesson plans are provided as Google Docs with full edit rights. Join us at White Farm in Concord, NH to gain the skills and knowledge required to successfully engage students in project-based learning. The classroom goal is for students to improve STEM performance through growing a sustainable food product. Emphasis is also placed on using evidence to support conclusions. Students will integrate math, biology, chemistry, Earth science, engineering, and physics while discovering the fun and benefits of gardening year-round.

3DBear, is an Augmented Reality “maker” program students can use to create, and then interact, with scenes on a phone or tablet. Teachers can use 3DBear in ELA, Social Studies, Science, Art, SEL, or Math to teach students or for students to demonstrate their own mastery. The act of creating for a real audience also teaches higher level skills such as design thinking, creativity, problem solving, computational thinking, and collaboration and provides a link between academic subjects, student interests, and the real world.3DBear works on iPads and iPhones (with an A9 processor or later), and Android devices. It will not work on most chromebooks or Windows machines.

Picture the last time you doodled on your notebook paper. We bet you were in a class, at a workshop, in a conference, or at a staff meeting. Whether you realize it or not that doodling was helping to keep you focused and even helping you remember what you were learning about.

Sketchnotes help keep you and your students focused during lessons, workshops, etc. while helping you remember important information about the topic. Haven't heard of sketchnotes? No problem! We are starting from the beginning. Join us April 29th-May 24th to learn how to make those doodles even more meaningful and purposeful. During these four weeks you will complete a few simple, fun, engaging tasks a week to further your understanding of sketchnotes and sketchnoting. We will use a new tool called Wakelet and Twitter to help us with sharing our thoughts and ideas with you and each other. BUT if you aren't on Twitter, no big deal, you don't have to be. If you don't know what Wakelet is, no big deal, you don't need to . . . it's easy! Not an artist? You don't need to be!

Summer PD - Geospatial Teacher Workshops

There will be two geospatial teacher workshops this summer and details are now posted on the NHEdGIS website at http://www.nhedgis.org/2019-summer-spatial-institutes.html

The annual Watershed Ecology Institute (https://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/education/documents/wei-2019-flyer.pdf) led by Judy Tumosa will be held at the Sullivan County Complex in Unity, NH on July 16th-18th. "Join the N.H. Fish and Game Watershed Education Program (WEP) and the Sullivan County Conservation District (SCCD) to explore the aquatic and terrestrial wonders of the Sullivan County lands in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley."

NHEdGIS will also be offering a Power of Data workshop (http://www.nhedgis.org/power-of-data-in-new-hampshire-475256.html) in conjunction with an NSF funded program out of Northern Arizona University. The NH Power of Data program focuses on helping teachers plan and implement a geospatial inquiry project with their students and especially on how to help students understand how to choose, symbolize, and display data in thoughtful and honest ways to tell a story. It consists of a week long face-to-face institute following some online preparatory sessions. We are currently determining the best week (August 5-9 OR 12-16) and location (Hopkinton Middle High School OR Plymouth Regional High School) so if you are interested in attending this program please fill out this survey (https://goo.gl/forms/MAeQPJw42iYWLE6L2) to let us know your preferences.

As Awards Chair for NHSTE I would like to point out two new awards ISTE has this year that are self nominating. Because of this I would encourage you to possibly nominate yourself for the ISTE Impact Award. As I am sure you are still making a difference in education and doing outstanding work you would be ideal for this award. It is possible that you feel the same way about your district and would consider nominating your district for the ISTE Distinguished District Award. A description for either can be found below.

ISTE Impact Award: This award honors individuals or organizations making a difference in education and whose outstanding work improves learning for all students.

ISTE Distinguished District Award: This award highlights an exceptional school district who demonstrates effectiveness and innovation in the application of educational technology. They ensure equitable, accessible and appropriate technology for all students and exhibit a progressive mindset when it comes to challenges in education (we have presented this award in the past, but have updated the nomination form).

Congressional App Challenge: Inspire the Next Generation!

We are counting on educators like you to help us promote STEM education among today’s youth. The Congressional App Challenge is the most prestigious prize in student computer science. Participation in the challenge has grown exponentially and has reached underserved, diverse, and rural student populations.

Every year members of the US House of Representatives challenge students in their districts to create and submit their original apps for a chance to win the Congressional App Challenge (CAC). Each challenge is district-specific. The New Hampshire Congressional District 1 U.S. Representative, Chris Pappas, has signed on and is looking for applications from students in NH Congressional District #1.

Representative Pappas will publicly recognize winning teams and each winning app may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. Additional prizes may also be available. The Congressional Internet Caucus initiates the annual Congressional App Challenge. They have appointed the non-profit Internet Education Foundation to provide the CAC with supplemental staffing and support.

The Teacher Showcase highlights the use of instructional technology tools and resources that engage and empower students to enhance learning. Examples include: demonstrating technology-enhanced projects using online interactive tools, social networking, video libraries, Google tools, or online conferencing to get students excited about and involved in their learning. From 10:00 to 11:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday and 8:50 to 10:20 on Thursday, conference attendees walk around and chat with Teacher Showcase presenters. Each showcase is provided with a new, larger 15’ x 20’ booth and 6’ long skirted table for displaying their materials. The process is comfortable, relaxed, and informative.

The Student STEAM Showcase highlights programs across the state engaging students in a variety of STEAM activities in grades K-12. The student showcase takes place in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:15 (1:00-1:30 setup, 1:30-3:00 showcase, 3:00-3:15 breakdown). We welcome up to two adults with a maximum of five students per team. Each team receives a one-day conference registration for a maximum of two adults. Each student team is provided with a new, larger 15’ x 20’ booth and 6’ long skirted table for displaying their materials.

EdTech Playgrounds bring together educators and exhibitors to provide attendees with hands-on fun and engagement in the EXPO Center morning and afternoon. Potential topics include: Digital Age Library, MakerSpaces, Assistive Technology, Technology & the Early Learner, Coding & Robotics, GAFE, Augmented/Virtual Reality, and Video Production. Playground participants receive a round or square table and plenty of space for setting up an interactive environment. Teacher playgrounds run for 2 hours.

From ISTE... "We're seeking sessions that demonstrate and inspire educators to develop students' learning, problem-solving, critical-thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills. If you've had a lightning-bolt moment that led you to create an innovative edtech lesson or initiative, tell us about it in your proposal."

NHSTE is proud to announce a new professional development offering for the 2018/19 school year ~ Digital Learning Specialist Roundtables

The second Digital Learning Specialist Roundtable is being hosted by Nicole Cassamassino at Bedford's Peter Woodbury School for elementary school Technology Integration Teachers/Specialists. Part Learning Tour, part EdCamp, and part discussion group, the attendees set the discussion topics for the day and support each other with their challenges.

We know that professional development is important for everyone. In many cases, technology integration teachers are solo in their own buildings or districts. This roundtable opportunity is for those technology integration teachers interested in having conversations about particular topics to improve instruction for staff and students in their own district. Topics/discussion will be tailored based on participant attendees thoughts. Time will be built into schedule for a tour of school/staff conversation. Let’s get together to have thoughtful conversations to help move our schools forward.

A light breakfast and lunch are included in the registration fee. Attendees are encouraged to bring both their best practices and challenges.

“Finding Your Swing”

During the 2017-18 school year, Rye Junior High School completed a year-long project called “Finding Your Swing”, linked to a school book read of The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. The term “swing” is used within the competitive rowing community to describe when a rowing crew is in perfect sync with each other and the boat is moving forward at optimum performance. We used the term as a theme for the year to present numerous interdisciplinary challenges to students.

One focus of the project was that each grade level (6thgrade - 8th grade) built two rowboats and their corresponding oars. Each grade level constructed a different model boat. At the end of the year, May 31st, RJHS held a “Rye Rowing Regatta” in Rye Harbor at which time grade level teams raced their rowboats through a marked course within the harbor. The entire community was invited to line the shores to cheer on the student performances and accomplishments!

Andrew Wilson from Lin-wood is the National Honoree at the middle school level! Congratulations to Andrew and Carol Smith, the librarian at Lin-wood who supported his project. Andrew, his parent, and Carol will be headed to California this summer to attend Esri’s EdUC (Educational User Conference) and UC (International User Conference) where Andrew will present to the larger GIS community.

ISTE18 NH Dinner Invitation in Chicago & RSVP

This post is targeted to anyone from New Hampshire (NHSTE member or not) who is going to ISTE18 in Chicago at the end of June. Hard to believe that the school year is nearly over and in about a month some of us head to Chicago for ISTE 2018!!!

NHSTE is once again planning the New Hampshire Networking Dinner during ISTE. We generally meet after the opening keynote on Sunday evening, June 24th, probably around 8:00pm ish this year at a restaurant near the NHSTE hotel. This event has ranged from a small group of 12 to 15 to a group of over 40 of us! We have gone to some gourmet restaurants and some more casual locations. I have already located two options close the NHSTE hotel, the Fairfield Inn & Suites Chicago Downtown, 216 E Ontario Street Chicago, IL 60611. Once I have an idea as to how many are interested, I will finalize the location. Anyone from New Hampshire (and their guests) is invited to attend.

GEN YES New Hampshire Chapters in New Hampshire Schools

Fourteen New Hampshire schools began a Student Technology Leadership program called GenYES at the beginning of this school year. In these schools, 176 students were highly prepared using the GenYES curriculum to assist their 492 teachers as well as administrators and IT staff integrate technology into their schools. These Student Technology Leaders (STLs) accomplished this by completing 459 (as of 4/20/18) Technology Assistance Projects (TAPs) in collaboration with teachers and IT staff. TAP examples from each school can be found in the attached PDF. The 14 NH schools included 2 high schools, 1 middle school, 4 K-8 schools, and 7 elementary schools.

Gen YES is a great way to get your students up to speed with ICT Literacy, personalize their learning, and help your teachers increase their tech skills. As you plan for your 2018-2019 school year, consider hosting a Gen YES Chapter in your school. New Hampshire has a great initial start up rate of $2975 per school. Annual membership is only $500 per school. The Gen YES program and philosophy align well with our New Hampshrie initiatives of personalization, competency based education, and the Future Ready New Hampshire initiative.

The Gen YES New Hampshire Consortium hopes all NH schools will consider implementing Gen YES in your schools for 2018-19. The Gen YES model is flexible enough to fit into any school program. The fees support an abundance of training materials, access to the Gen YES online student TAP reporting/completing system, statistics on students and TAPS, as well as an up to date student curriculum. I wanted to let you know that in addition to the STEAM concentration in our Experienced Educators Program, we're also launching a stand-alone pre or post-masters Certificate in Integrated STEAM Education. Both programs are low- to no-residency and are rooted in experiential learning, classroom facilitation, authentic assessment, PBL and SEL. Can you help us spread the word? New England ISTE hosted our first Train-the-Trainer Institute on May 5th in Rye, New Hampshire. Our next workshop and training is Saturday, July 21, 2018, in Northampton, MA. Completing this training will make one eligible to train for NEISTE across New England.

Friends of NHSTE and New Hampshire Colleagues,

This email is targeted to anyone from New Hampshire (NHSTE member or not) who is going to ISTE18 in Chicago at the end of June. Hard to believe that the school year is nearly over and in about a month some of us head to Chicago for ISTE 2018!!!

NHSTE is once again planning the New Hampshire Networking Dinner during ISTE. We generally meet after the opening keynote on Sundayevening, June 24th, probably around 8:00pm ish this year at a restaurant near the NHSTE hotel. This event has ranged from a small group of 12 to 15 to a group of over 40 of us! We have gone to some gourmet restaurants and some more casual locations. I have already located a couple options close the NHSTE hotel, the Fairfield Inn & Suites Chicago Downtown, 216 E Ontario Street Chicago, IL 60611. Once I have an idea as to how many are interested, I will finalize the location. Anyone from New Hampshire (and their guests) is invited to attend.

Community Atlas Project 2018 with NHEDGIS

Can you believe how fast the end of the year is approaching? It's almost time for you to submit your students "Community Atlas" project for the 2018 school year. Remember, a Community Atlas project is simply a collection of different maps or apps that students have prepared on at least a somewhat related topic. Examples from past years include:

Unity, New Hampshire: Our Beloved Hometown by Unity 7th Grade students
New Hampshire Resources by Groveton 7th & 8th Grade students
Roman Empire by Fairgrounds Middle School students
Civil Rights Movement by Surry Village Charter School students
Lincoln's History and Future by Lin-Wood 4th Grade students

Code.org’s Computer Science Fundamentals courses have about 15 lessons that may be implemented as one unit or over the course of a semester. Students create computer programs that will help them learn to collaborate with others, develop problem-solving skills, and persist through difficult tasks. They will study programming concepts, computational thinking, digital citizenship, and develop interactive games or stories they can share.

Looking for schools to participate in the TechWomen Ambassadors Week November 2018

The NH High Tech Council’s TechWomen|TechGirls Initiative committee has begun planning for the 2018 TechWomen Ambassadors Week for 8th and 9th grade girls. The theme “STEMspiration” engages girl students to explore STEM Careers. This is a one day, 2 hour event that will take place on location at several high schools across the state during the week of November 12 – November 16, 2018.

TechWomen Ambassadors representing various high tech industry sectors including aerospace, robotics, biotech, computing, engineering, green tech and more mobilize by coming to your school to participate in the events by telling their career story, subject matter expertise, and some hands-on demonstrations. For anyone who is considering attending ISTE 2018 in Chicago (June 24 to 27), NHSTE would like to inform you of an opportunity available to all NHSTE members - the NHSTE Housing Block. Some of you have taken advantage of this in the past, this may be new information to others.

As a benefit of NHSTE helping to market the ISTE 2017 conference, we have the option to secure rooms together in one hotel at the conference for our NHSTE members. This is a limited number of rooms and requires Housing Selection by February 1st and cancellation by April 9, 2018 without penalty. Here are a few Important Notes:

Deb Boisvert hasarranged for a free Code.org k-5 training session at Deerfield on Saturday Jan 20, 8-3 . Usually this class is only offered in Hopkinton, but if we can get enough folks it will be offered in Deerfield. Please encourage folks who might be interested to sign up ASAP so that we can have it on this side of Concord.

The Office of Educational Technology at the New Hampshire Department of Education and Project Tomorrow are hosting a webinar on December 6th for Administrators, Teachers, and all Educators interested in learning more about the Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning and how you might use Speak Up in your class, school or district. Speak Up is the research tool districts and schools use to learn what students, educators, parents and the community have to say about education issues. It’s a free and easy way to collect information about teaching, learning, and academics at your school or district.

Speak Up is both a national research project and a free service to schools and districts everywhere. Speak Up 2017 surveys will be open until January 19, 2018. This year, SpeakUp/Project Tomorrow has partnered with Future Ready Schools, and the surveys will be useful in developing your future ready school plans.

Use Speak Up to get the pulse of what’s happening in your school (or district) and benchmark it with national results.
